One look at all those little girls dressed as princesses at Walt Disney World demonstrates how much children are influenced by the fictional characters they see. That’s why we’re applauding Disney Cruise Line for giving girls a new role model: Captain Minnie Mouse, who began appearing on Disney ships in April. Captain Minnie is part of a broader initiative on Disney’s part to encourage women to consider careers in the maritime industry. Currently, 5.4 percent of officers on cruise ships are female, according to Cruise Industry News.
On board, Captain Minnie Mouse appears in new STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) youth activities. Ashore, she and a female Disney Cruise Line officer visit with local children to raise awareness of women in the cruise industry. And we love the tagline of the Captain Minnie Mouse merchandise: “You Can Call Me Captain.”
