Whether you’re ready for a new challenge or are looking for a raise, a promotion is a great way to get ahead. However, promotions may come with extra responsibilities, so you must ensure you’re ready for everything that comes along with the offer.

Before you apply, make sure you ask yourself these questions before moving forward with a promotion opportunity.

WHY AM I SEEKING A PROMOTION
There are several reasons why you might be seeking a promotion. Some of these reasons include making more money, the status of a new title, the promise of a new challenge, the ability to flex your leadership muscle, or a combination of these reasons and more.

Establishing a clear motive for pursuing a promotion will help you better prepare for your next move.

IS NOW THE RIGHT TIME AND WHY?
Once you’ve clarified your reason for seeking a promotion, you should determine if it’s the right time for this move and why. For example, if your reason for wanting a promotion is because you don’t feel challenged, then you should determine if you’ve learned everything you need to learn at your current role and if you could handle the increased workload with a new challenge.

If you’re going through a lot of different life transitions, such as having a baby or moving to a new home, you may want to get a little more settled in your personal life before you tackle something new at work. Conversely, if you feel you’ve learned all you need to learn, it may be time for something new.

WHY AM I THE IDEAL CANDIDATE
If you’ve decided it’s the right time, and your reason for seeking a promotion makes sense with your current situation, you need to determine if you’re the ideal candidate for the role. This question will help you communicate your qualifications, accomplishments, and what separates you from the pack of applicants.

You’ll want to take the time to make a list of the things you bring to the table and why you are the best option for this new position. Highlighting your attributes and distinctive qualities will help you put together a more compelling pitch for the hiring manager.

Before you pursue a promotion, make sure to ask yourself these questions and determine if this transition is right for you. You don’t want to take on more than you can handle. If you’ve decided this is the right move for your situation, put your heart and soul into preparing for the interview. Before you know it, you may find the promotion of your dreams.
